It is obvious: we all speak the same language.

At school I was only interested in maths and sciences.  I looked on English and language with disdain.  I even managed to fail my English Language O-level first time round.  The irony is that ever since, describing what I have done has probably been more important than actually doing it in most of my career.

Consequently I am ill equipped to write grammatically correct English let alone criticise use of it.  I won’t let that stop me.

Methdololgy.  This is the word for the study of methods much as climatology, psychology, mineralogy are the words indicating study in other areas of knowledge.  It is practised by methodologists.  It is a long and gangly word that goes on and on.  So why do so many people use methodology when they mean method.  Method is a crisp, precise word: “I used this method”.  It is short and to the point and allows no imprecision of interpretation.  There is a method in my madness not a methodology.

Gay.  This is another short word.  Clear and accurate in what it conveys…except it has been hijacked.  Most of the time I am morose but sometimes I’m gay.  Ooops, no I’m not.

Language evolves.  New words are needed, but do we have to abandon perfectly good words and hijack others?

It is obvious: we all speak the same language – and attach different meanings to many of the words.
